Walkabout Wisdom
Lessons learned from roads traveled and honest moments
These aren’t tips from travel blogs or advice from guidebooks. This is wisdom earned through mistakes, kindness learned from strangers, and truths discovered in moments of complete uncertainty. Each lesson was written in the moment it was learned, when the feeling was raw and real.
Take what fits your story.
Finding beauty in the uncertain path ahead
Relax, everything is going to plan
Even when it doesn’t feel like it. Sometimes it’s good to have no plan, and that’s exactly where you need to be.
Take your time in life; rushing means missing out on the good stuff
The magic happens in the pauses between destinations, in the conversations that run long, in the moments when you’re not trying to get anywhere at all.
Perfect plans are nice, but unexpected things can be even better
That wrong turn that led to the best hostel. The delayed flight that introduced you to a lifelong friend. Life’s most beautiful gifts rarely arrive on schedule.
Don’t plan too much; leave space for surprises
Pack light, plan lighter. The universe has a way of filling the empty spaces with exactly what you didn’t know you needed.
Life unfolds beautifully when you don’t overthink it
Your mind will offer a thousand reasons why something won’t work. Your heart usually knows the one reason why it will.
What seems easy may not always be the best choice.
The path of least resistance sometimes leads to the least rewarding places. Growth lives in the spaces that ask something of us.
Your gut feeling is often right; trust yourself when making decisions. Your decision is the right one
That quiet voice beneath all the noise? It’s been traveling longer than you have. Listen to it, then trust where it leads you.
Do it so you know you can
Not for the story, not for the photo, but for the quiet confidence that comes from knowing you’re braver than you thought.
The souls we meet and the connections we keep
Missing someone often means you’re scared things might change within that relationship
That ache in your chest isn’t just about distance – it’s about the fear that closeness might shift while you’re apart.
It’s tough, but learning to let go of people is important
Some people are meant to walk with us for a season, not a lifetime. Learning to release with love is one of travel’s hardest lessons.
Goodbyes hurt, but maybe you’ll meet again when the time is right
Not every goodbye is forever. Trust that the connections meant to return will find their way back to you.
Feeling lonely after leaving loved ones is normal; new connections will come
The emptiness after saying goodbye is real and valid. Be patient with yourself as your heart makes room for new people.
When dating or meeting with someone in their city, remember you’re stepping into their life; be mindful of this
You’re a visitor in their world, not the center of it. Approach with curiosity and respect for the life they’ve built.
Sometimes it’s better to let someone go, even if it will hurt, it will hurt less now than down the road.
Kindness sometimes looks like difficult honesty. A gentle ending now can spare deeper pain later.
When dating, honesty is key. Let them know your plans, why you’re not looking for something long-term, and if they stop talking to you, it’s better than breaking their heart later.
Clear intentions are a gift to both of you. Let them choose their own path with full knowledge of yours.
We don’t fall in love with a person. We fall in love with the person we become with them.
Love is as much about discovery as connection – who you become in someone’s presence is part of the magic.
When the road gets rough and you need a friend
Letting go can be hard, but it’s a necessary lesson
Whether it’s a relationship that’s run its course, a dream that didn’t unfold as planned, or simply the need to release control – letting go teaches us that holding on too tightly often hurts more than the release itself.
Stay calm in tough times; panicking only makes things worse
When everything feels like it’s falling apart, breath. Panic clouds judgment and steals energy you need for actual solutions. Sometimes the bravest thing you can do is simply breathe.
Life has ups and downs; that’s what makes it interesting
The valleys give meaning to the peaks. Without contrast, we’d never truly appreciate the good moments or develop the resilience that comes from weathering storms. It’s all part of the beautiful, messy human experience.
A smile can make a big difference
A genuine one that acknowledges shared humanity. Sometimes a simple smile is the bridge between strangers, the light in someone’s dark day, or the reminder that kindness still exists.
Remember, time is more important than money.
You can always make more money, but you can’t make more time. The moments spent with people you love, doing things that matter to you, or simply being present – these are the real treasures that compound over a lifetime.
Courage is found in running towards the things that scare you
The things that terrify us – vulnerability, change, pursuing dreams – are usually the very things our souls are calling us to embrace. Courage isn’t the absence of fear; it’s moving forward anyway.
Sometimes it’s tough to follow these rules, and that’s perfectly okay
Life isn’t about perfect execution of wise advice. You’ll mess up, make poor choices, and forget your own best intentions. That’s not failure – that’s being human. Grace for yourself is just as important as any lesson you’ll learn.
Growth happens outside of your comfort zone; embrace discomfort for personal development.
Comfort zones are lovely places, but nothing grows there. The moments that stretch you – whether through travel, difficult conversations, or new experiences – are where you discover who you’re capable of becoming.
Hard-earned lessons shared with gentle honesty
Meeting people after traveling can be different, they can change and so have you
The person who left isn’t the same one who returns. Growth happens on both sides of goodbye, and that’s okay. Sometimes relationships evolve, sometimes they fade, and sometimes they deepen in ways you never expected.
I’ve never regretted jumping into water & getting up early
Never regretted jumping into water or getting up early. Both wake you up in the best way. Refreshing, peaceful, and always worth it.
Always be kind before judging others.
Everyone is carrying something invisible. That rude person at the counter, the traveler who won’t share their space – they might be having the worst day of their life. Leading with kindness costs nothing and changes everything.
Age doesn’t matter; older people have a lot to teach you
Some of the most profound conversations happen with people decades older than you. They’ve walked paths you’re just discovering and can offer perspective that no guidebook contains. Listen with your whole heart.
Bigger dorm rooms in hostels are usually more fun
More people means more stories, more laughter, and more chance connections. Yes, it’s noisier and messier, but community thrives in numbers. The 12-bed dorm might change your life in ways the private room never could.
After saying goodbye to people you like or love, it leaves space for new connections
Letting go isn’t losing – it’s making room. Every goodbye creates space in your heart for new hellos. The love doesn’t disappear; it just makes space for more love to enter.
If you don’t book a flight or bus and the price goes up, it wasn’t meant to be; just let it go.
The universe has a way of redirecting us when we’re not listening. That price increase might be protecting you from something or guiding you toward something better. Trust the flow and release the grip.
Remember, no one actually has their life perfectly figured out
That put-together person you admire? They’re winging it too. We’re all improvising this life thing, making it up as we go along. Your uncertainty doesn’t make you behind – it makes you human.
It’s okay to feel lonely; it’s part of the journey of traveling
Loneliness isn’t a sign you’re doing something wrong – it’s proof you’re brave enough to venture into the unknown. Sometimes the most profound growth happens in those quiet, solo moments when you’re learning to be your own company.
Knowing a few words in the local language goes a long way in connecting with people and showing respect
A simple “thank you” in someone’s native tongue can light up their entire face. It’s not about perfection – it’s about effort, respect, and the universal language of trying to connect across differences.
Sometimes it’s the small, unexpected moments that become the most cherished memories.
Not the famous landmarks or planned activities, but the stranger who shared their food, the sunset you stumbled upon while lost. Magic hides in the margins of your itinerary.
Sometimes getting lost leads to the most incredible discoveries; enjoy the journey of finding your way back.
Wrong turns become right stories. That street you wandered down by mistake might lead to your favorite cafĂ©, your new friend, or simply the reminder that not all who wander are lost – some are just discovering.
Practical wisdom for the wandering heart
Keep a sacrificial shirt for those adventurous travel days
That one piece of clothing you don’t mind getting dirty, torn, or paint-splattered. Sometimes it’s best to dirty one then multiple.
Always pack a “Cup of Soup” in your travel bag for flights or busy travel days
Perfect at the airport for saving money or at a hostel as a snack. Sometimes the simplest things bring the most relief.
Traveling with less baggage not only lightens your load but also opens up more opportunities for spontaneity.
Every extra item is a choice you’ve already made. Pack light, and leave room for the unexpected turns that make the best stories.
You can’t cram a million experiences into every day. Remember, you have months to travel; it’s okay to take a day off now and then
Rest isn’t wasted time, it’s when you process all the beauty you’ve absorbed. Your soul needs space to catch up with your adventures.
Asking locals for help is invaluable. Some of the most amazing people I’ve met have been through these connections
Vulnerability opens doors that guidebooks can’t. When you ask for help, you’re inviting someone to share their world with you.
Be quiet, kind, and respectful to the people in your dorm room. If you’re not, karma will catch up with you.
We’re all just trying to get some sleep in a strange place. The energy you put out there comes back to you, sometimes in the very next hostel.
Have time to kill in a town? Go to the public library. There are books, chill zones, toilets, and more for free
Libraries are sanctuaries everywhere. A quiet moment to breathe, think, and remember that knowledge and kindness are universal languages.
Go to an Op Shop to get a corkscrew or a knife for picnics
Sometimes the best tools for making memories are hiding in the most unexpected places. Plus, everything has a story already.
Sometimes you just have to do it for the plot
When logic says no but your heart whispers ‘what if’, trust the whisper. The best chapters are written when you lean into the unknown.
Always check that the ‘bum gun’ is working, especially at overnight bus stops. And if not, make sure you bring something with you
Small practical wisdom that saves big uncomfortable moments. Sometimes the most unglamorous advice is the most valuable.
Don’t pay for a pubcrawl – just follow them around
The fun is in the journey, not the overpriced guide. Sometimes the best adventures are the ones you create by being resourcefully cheeky.
Borrowed wisdom from someone who knows me best
Chase what gives you energy
Life’s too short to spend it on things that drain your soul. Follow what lights you up from the inside – it’s your compass pointing toward who you’re meant to be.
Whatever you’re not changing you’re choosing
Sometimes we forget we have power over our own story. The things we complain about but don’t change? We’re quietly choosing them.
Beginnings always hide themselves in ends
When something falls apart, it’s making space for something new to grow. Every goodbye carries a hidden hello, even when we can’t see it through the tears.
Crying is a beautiful thing to experience, don’t hold it in when you’re lucky enough to feel an emotion so strong that makes you need to cry
Tears are proof that you’re alive, that you care deeply, that you’re human. Don’t apologise for feeling everything – it’s a gift, even when it hurts.
Take photos and videos of the little things that you might forget about a place
The big moments take care of themselves in memory. It’s the tiny details – that slip away if you don’t catch them.
Just ask questions, and they will open up to you
People are walking stories waiting to be heard. Genuine curiosity is the key that unlocks hearts – most souls are just waiting for someone to care enough to ask.
Enjoy the passage of time
Time moves whether we’re paying attention or not. There’s something magical about actually noticing it pass .
Going out and having fun with good people
Joy shared is joy multiplied. Surround yourself with souls who laugh easily, love freely, and remind you that life is meant to be celebrated, not just survived.
